Writing II (Week 10): Working on a final draft

Make sure to avoid altogether using grammar checker, translation software, and generative AI text (whether directly or paraphrased) – Using any of these can lower your originality score. Your final draft must have an originality score between 90%-100%. I will generate your originality score April 1, 2024 on your completed first draft.

Monday

  • Working with a writing partner, create a document or write on a note pad your name as the reviewer and the name of your partner whose work you are reviewing. Also, include the date at the top of the page. Then, review the following:
    • Check to see that your partner has five paragraphs with each paragraph between five-to-eight sentences with at least 120-150 words.
    • Check that each paragraph has a 0.5 inch indentation.
    • Check spacing:
      • Essay
        • Double spacing
        • No extra spacing between paragraphs
        • No extra spacing between the title and the first paragraph.
        • Align text to the left.
      • References
        • Are there references? At least three references.
        • Single space within each reference and double space between each reference.
        • French indentation.
        • Align text to the left.
        • Insert page break just before the References page.
    • Introduction paragraph
      • Hook
        • Famous quote “To be or not to be, that is the question” – Shakespeare
        • Deep, profound question
        • Impactful fact or statistic (citation)
      • Background information or context of the problem
        • State what, why, when, where, how, etc.
        • At least one citation.
        • Three to five sentences
      • Thesis statement: transition, topic, claim, “because”, and three key points

Tuesday

  • Current grades have been posted to ESIIMA.
  • Originality report scores sent out to those who have completed five paragraphs of your Unit II persuasive essay.
  • Continue working with writing partners by leaving comments to each other’s work:
    • Page break
    • Alphabetize references
    • Remove extraneous information: notes; problem statement, thesis statement, etc.
    • Title page
    • Third person
    • Citations: Begin each body paragraph with ME and conclude each body paragraph with AL; At least one citation in the background information of the introduction paragraph.
    • Avoid absolutes: all, everybody, everything, everyone, always, never, everyone, no one, each, very
    • Avoid: things, important, essential, crucial, people, stuff, one of…,
    • Review (in)appropriate words and boosting.
