Description

This subject is of a practical nature and aims to transition the learner from writing fully developed body paragraphs to creating well-organized and fully developed academic essays by implementing logical and practical steps that relate to the overall writing process. This subject falls under the Skills Development for English Communication strand, is a continuation of knowledge and skills obtained in Propaedeutic I courses, and aligns concurrently with the other Propaedeutic II courses: Listening and Speaking II, Reading II, Writing II, and the Integration of Skills Through Culture II. ## Objective Throughout the course, the learner will develop different strategies and skill sets for writing various types of essays in English at a B1+ level, according to CEFR.

Methodology

The methodology for the course will be student centered both from a process and product standpoint. Students will play an active role in the writing process. Additionally, students will participate in self and peer-assessment to create a more community-based learning environment. The teacher will encourage the use of new vocabulary covered in this course and in the other propaedeutic courses in order to write academic essays.

Teaching materials

Microsoft 365 suite (i.e., Teams, Word, etc.), UAA digital library, websites, and other ICTs to support the writing skill.

Assessment

  • Expository Essay (problem statement, thesis statement, outline, and drafts) – 25%
  • Persuasive Essay (problem statement, thesis statement, outline, and drafts) – 35%
  • Argumentative Essay (problem statement, thesis statement, outline, and drafts) – 40%

Notes

  • A minimum of 80% of class attendance is required to pass the course.
  • Written work will follow the Publication Manual of the American Psychological Association.
  • According to UAA Plagiarism Policy ELT 2023, if plagiarism is found anywhere in the research paper, a zero will be given as a grade.
  • Instructor will upload partial grades to ESIIMA that refers to student achievement throughout the semester. Final grades will not be an average of prior grades, but rather represent the current grade at the time it was uploaded.
