Tips

  • Everyone should have something in your Word document that you’ve been working on last week and are currently working on this week. As of 2024-02-06, 17 folks have not made any edits to their Word document since 2024-01-29.
  • During week one, we discussed generally what kinds of data you might consider when collecting your own data. It’s too early in the process to think specifically what instruments to use, unless you happen to come across something in an article. For example, you might think that interviews with a teacher, students, administrator, or parent might be useful; you might consider observing different groups of students; you might consider a questionnaire for teachers or students, etc.; but don’t spend time at this point trying to determine what kind of observation sheet, questionnaire, interview guide, etc., since we’ll have time to do this once you have completed the literature review.
  • Suggestions for getting the most out of our weekly tutoring sessions:
    • Have everything that you have been working on uploaded to your respective Word document. – I open up your Word document before I begin each tutoring session.
    • Each week show progress reflected in your respective Word document.
    • Remove any resolved comments in your Word document and continue to post comments to your Word document as necessary. There are two types of comments you might leave:
      • Comments or notes to yourself to help organize your thought process.
      • Comments as questions to me, mentioning me, “@BenjaminLeeStewart” and stating what you would like for me to look at or questions that you have.
    • Have any latest questions that you have ready to be asked.
    • Be prepared to begin your tutoring session by stating, “Today I want to discuss…” or “I have a question…”
    • Be prepared to discuss what you have been working on, challenges you have been facing, etc. – consider the questions included in your weekly reflections.
    • If applicable, be prepared to express what you need from me, your tutor, to better assist you.
  • Have you heard the expression, ““If a tree falls in a forest and no one is around to hear it, does it make a sound?” Translation: If a student works really hard (e.g., working on a personal computer and saving to a local drive, etc.) but fails to show any evidence of their efforts (e.g., upload work to our shared Word document, etc.), did they do the work?
  • I’m not looking for a perfect text at this point. I totally expect many Word documents to be messy, disorganized, etc., but have something and showing change (through Word document revisions) can only help you. The 40% of your grade that I will assign (and upload for the first time next week to ESIIMA) relates to your process. Please… work as often as you can and show as many revisions as you can in your Word documents. There should be substantive revisions to your Word document each week while completing your literature review.
