Embracing Originality and Process in Academic Writing: A Guide for English Language Learners

The following are my recommendations for students whom I have in class.

Benjamin L. Stewart
  • I suggest to English language learners (writers) to avoid using any tools to generate their text – Doing so will decrease one’s originality score and increase the AI score:
    • Grammarly, ProWritingAid, Quillbot, Microsoft Word Editor, and the like.
    • ChatGPT, Gemini, and the like. Avoid using Genative AI to produce text, organize ideas for your text, and paraphrase (putting into your own words) any generative AI text.
    • Translation software
  • I expect English language learners (writers) to turn in final drafts with certain writing errors with moments of awkward phrasing. A certain degree of non-standard writing in English will not negatively affect your grade.
  • I measure (grade) writing as a process with several iterations (drafts), which allows students to establish a “baseline” and make subsequent improvements to their texts over time.
  • When writing an academic text, the references page is not scanned for originality.
  • Once a completed first draft has been submitted, English language learners (writers) are provided an originality report with ample time to make changes if an optimal originality score of 90%-100% is not achieved.
  • I expect English language learners (writers) to recognize and embrace their original voice through a creative expression of viewpoints along with a certain set of standard writing conventions relevant to genre, purpose, and audience.
